Artist Julia McKenzie’s work draws on the ephemeral treasures and lost stories of our coast. Here she shares her top spots for artistic inspiration. Compiled by Alison Parkes
1. Whitstable I have been visiting since I was an art student. In later years, when our daughters were young, we had a caravan right on the beach. It is a joy beachcombing early in the morning in pyjamas, a cup of tea in hand.
2. Botany Bay in Kent has low chalk cliffs and rockpools that have inspired many of my drawings.
3. The coastline between Falmouth and The Lizard has particular family resonance as my parents are both from Falmouth. Loe Bar is also a very special place.
4. The west coast of Scotland is awe inspiring. Looking at the black Cuillin mountains over on Skye from the startling white coral beaches near Applecross is a magical experience.
5. Walking along the coast from Overstrand to Cromer Pier with good friends and the promise of fish and chips, or fireworks at New Year, is very memorable. We have found so many amazing things on the beach.
