Coast explores the latest hot hotel on the British coast – The Pier Hotel, Gorleston.
WHAT’S THE BUZZ? The hotel sits on one of the most picturesque beaches on the east coast. This beautifully refurbished Edwardian hotel takes in the sweeping sandy bay that leads to Britain’s most easterly point. Looking north are views down the bustling River Yare towards the bright lights and attractions of Great Yarmouth.
The Pier is as popular with local people as it is with businesses and holidaymakers. It is one of the best-loved eateries in Gorleston, with dining options in its wine bar, busy public bar and in its stylish restaurant overlooking the beach.
When the sun shines, which it often does in one of the driest parts of the country, guests can eat and drink on the beachside patio. The food ranges from fresh seafood, including Cromer crab when it’s in season, to favourites like steak and kidney pie and juicy burgers.
WHART ARE THE ROOMS LIKE? The Pier has 20 rooms on three floors, each with a view of the harbour or beach. There are doubles, a twin, a family room, premier rooms, an executive premier room, and the spacious Sunrise Suite featuring a sea-facing balcony that’s perfect for an early evening drink. All rooms are ensuite and have tea and coffee making facilities and large-screen televisions. Room service is available.
Each room has its own character. Room 203 for example, has an Art Deco twist, with a bath guests can relax in while watching a TV set into the wall or look out over Gorleston’s fabulous beach. Film director Danny Boyle, who stayed for a month while filming Yesterday, described the beach as “one of the great secrets of England”.
BEST SEA VIEW? The Pier’s executive premier room, premier rooms and Sunrise Suite have some stunning coastal views. Gorleston’s broad sandy beach goes on for miles, curving gracefully towards Lowestoft’s Ness Point, the most easterly spot in Britain.
The executive premier room features a large bay window and a spacious bathroom with a lovely walk-in shower, marbled tiles and a whirlpool bath. The premier rooms also offer a large bay window with comfortable chairs, while the Sunrise Suite’s lounge leads to a balcony overlooking the bay.
HOW ABOUT THE FOOD? Choice and variety are at the heart of the Pier Hotel’s food offer. In the light and airy dining room, with its white tablecloths and polished cutlery, you will find an à la carte menu featuring a varied and interesting selection of starters, mains and desserts, plus succulent roasts on Sunday. The extensive bar menu is packed with pub classics – from steak with all the trimmings and cod and chips to jacket potatoes and an outstanding homemade steak and ale pie.
People popping into the bar after a walk along Gorleston’s promenade can enjoy a morning coffee and a biscuit, while the Pier’s popular afternoon tea might include sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones with jam and clotted cream or a delicious slice of Victoria sponge.
The hotel is particularly proud of its breakfast, served in the restaurant and including a cold buffet selection and a hot food menu with a fine Full English and locally-sourced kippers and smoked haddock.
