Whilst a romantic getaway just for two is a blissful notion, in reality taking the dog can make it even better, as VICTORIA ROGERS discovers a serene dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall.

Without the presence of Poppy, our Jack Russell, and her desire for walks, our motivation to leave the luxurious enfolds of our beautiful Cornish bolthole Carn House would have been very low.

And as tempting as it was to stay indoors, the spectacular landscape surrounding the small village of Pendeen on Cornwall’s west coast, is quite simply unmissable. From beach walks at the nearby hidden gem of Portheras Cove, to breathtaking clifftop stomps along the Penwith Heritage Coast, after a day of exploration here your dog will be just as willing to curl up in their luxury accommodation as you are – bonus!

Luckily for us Poppy was entirely on board with our relaxed weekend away plan; after a day of satisfying adventures, she was willing to lounge in Carn House’s spacious garden whilst my husband and I cooked in the property’s purpose-built outdoor kitchen (including cocktail-making facilities and a very fancy Big Green Egg barbecue).

She lazily sprawled on her pristine bed, thoughtfully provided by the owners, whilst we enjoyed the use of the private sauna and hot tub for two. She was even treated to a post-beach wash in the property’s Pooches Parlour – akin to a doggy spa experience, with a heated outdoor shower, plus doggy toiletries, towels and treats. It is fair to say, Poppy enjoyed the luxury touches just as much as we did.

Carn House is a newly refurbished holiday cottage accommodating two people, finished to an exquisite standard throughout with features including a free-standing bathtub in the bedroom and a wood-burning stove in the open plan living area. This is an ideal peaceful spot for a break to rest and recharge. All three of us are in agreement, this little slice of paradise is on our ‘must re-visit soon’ list…
