Find whacky places to rest your head at Windmill, which has an outdoor barbecue/pizza oven named Big Bertha and a musical Shower Shack. From beehive camping pods (sleeping two) and Hector the ramshackle shepherd’s hut (sleeps four) to disused helicopter Galahad (sleeps three), there’s nothing ordinary about this destination.

The Park has all kinds of glamping options, from Airstreams and yurts to summerhouses and caravans. Airstreams are a quirky choice, with The Park offering retro options fitted with Original fixtures or more roomy modernised Versions. The Route 66 Airstream has been imported from the US and is refreshingly authentic, whereas Kara and Stravaigin have been lovingly revamped. All guests can use the heated swimming pools (although the sea is less than 500m away), sauna and steam room, plus the on-site award-winning café.

FOR A TIPI VILLAGE

This glamping village – consisting of 20 18ft-high tipis styled in an authentic North American fashion – is located in Tregildrans Quarry, a forested valley around a spring-fed lake four miles from Port Isaac and less than two from the coast. Swim in the lake or the sea, fish for rainbow trout, cycle the South West Coast Path or explore pretty seaside villages before bedding down in your sustainable stay.

Superb sea views are the selling point at the Black Isle Yurts site on the Moray Firth. Saunter down a cliff path through thick woodland to a secluded sandy beach and search for Bottlenose dolphins on the horizon before returning to your hand-crafted yurt inspired by Central Asian designs. The Gypsy Camp, near Wickham Bishops, Essex
Sitting in an idyllic spot four miles from the little-known beaches of the Blackwater Estuary, the camp – on Bouncers Farm and an old wartime gravel pit – is home to two bowtop wagons with snug beds and a bender tent made from local willow where visitors can prepare food and chill out. With no electricity, light is provided by candles, and cooking is done over a campfire.
