Contemporary meets classic at The Grand Hotel on Eastbourne seafront in Sussex. Panoramic sea views, afternoon tea and four-poster beds – what’s not to love? Words: Anne-Claire Heels
WHAT’S THE BUZZ?
The five-star Grand Hotel has graced the seafront of this scenic Sussex town since the 1870s. It’s much-loved 2 AA-Rosette Mirabelle Restaurant relaunched earlier this year (2018) after an extensive refurb and its décor is now a perfect marriage of the contemporary and the classic. The hotel also has its Garden Restaurant, a cocktail lounge, several function rooms, the Great Hall for afternoon tea, plus indoor and outdoor pools and a spa.
ANY LUXURIOUS TOUCHES?
Nespresso coffee machines, free WiFi, Molton Brown toiletries, towelling robes, whirlpool baths in some suites, and truly world-class service.
WHAT ARE THE ROOMS LIKE?
There are 152 rooms, from deluxe to suites. It’s a mix of grandeur from a bygone age and modern comfort – some four-poster beds, high ceilings, large balconies, coving, panelling and large picture windows.
BEST SEA VIEW?
Rooms at the front of the building offer panoramic sea views; many other rooms have side views of the sea.
HOW ABOUT THE FOOD?
It had to be the Mirabelle (open Tues-Sat) for dinner, where head chef Stephanie Malvoisin is serving modern dishes in this elegant dining room. I started with seared hand-dived scallops, followed by turbot en papillote with rhubarb compote, samphire and rainbow radishes, while the feather-light blueberry soufflé with chilled eiswein was a lovely way to finish. The menu changes weekly, depending on seasonal produce. Several diners were obviously regulars – not surprising when the food is wonderful and you are made feel so welcome.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
Stays at The Grand start from £75pp B&B, based on two sharing. The hotel hosts regular gourmet dining events – have dinner then make a night of it with cocktails and dancing. Book on 01323 412345 or at grandeastbourne.com.
