We take a sneak peek into Light and Land on the Mall, a photographic exhibition curated by landscape photographer Charlie Waite. Words by Madeleine Barber
You’ll be hard-pushed to find a person who doesn’t appreciate the power of photography. With the push of a button, we can capture a moment in time that would otherwise have been confined to memory and at the risk of being lost forever. With the right amount of light and colour, an intriguing subject, and carefully curated composition, photographs can convey, as well as evoke, powerful emotions.
Charlie Waite, a leading landscape photographer with 28 books and 30 solo exhibitions under his belt, is well aware of this. He believes that exhibitions of printed images are crucial to understanding a photographer’s motive and ‘creative impulse’. His new exhibition, Light and Land on the Mall, brings together striking landscape photographs taken by leading and amateur British photographers. Amongst images from all over the world, it celebrates the beauty of the British coast and offers the opportunity to connect with our landscape in a way that some may not have experienced before.
How does Charlie explain his exhibition? ‘Light and Land on the Mall is a celebration of the individual photographer’s personal response to a moment of beauty,’ he says. ‘It invites us to engage with the photographer’s intent for each individual image, allowing us as audience to stand alongside the photographer, immersed in the time and place when the image was made.’
Intrigued? We’ve picked out eight photographs for a taster of the exhibition. Scroll through the gallery below to take a look.
'Light and Land on the Mall' is running until 10th August at Mall Galleries, The Mall, London, SW1Y 5BD. Entry is free. For more information, visit mallgalleries.org.uk and lightandland.co.uk.
