With the native oyster season beginning in September, autumn is a great time to feast on or try out this deliciously salty seafood. Oysters are a speciality at one of Dorset’s best coastal restaurants, The Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis, where eminent chef Mark Hix MBE weaves his magic over a succulent seafood menu. The restaurant with outdoor deck is perched on the hillside above The Cobb, one of the town’s best loved landmarks, and has superlative views across Lyme Bay.
On Saturday 3rd September, Mark and his team will be holding an all-day event to celebrate the many different aspects of this centuries-old culinary tradition. Guest chefs include Nigel Bloxham of the Crab House Café and James McCarthy of Red Panda and East Kitchen + Bar, who will serve Asian-style dressed oysters. And there will be talks and tasting sessions exploring oyster heritage, with contributions from Pete Miles of Dorset Oysters and Billy Winters of Portland Oysters.
Each guest chef will set up their own stand to show off and talk through their take on oysters, guiding guests through the range and diversity of this British delicacy. Says Mark: ‘Oysters are a unique and quintessential piece of British food heritage. This day will bring the humble oyster to the forefront, showcasing and celebrating a versatile and truly British product.’ The Celebration also ties in with Lyme Regis Folk Festival and there will be music on the ‘Oyster Stage’ in nearby Lister Gardens, where live acts will perform at midday, 2pm and 4pm.
*The HIX Oyster Celebration takes place between 10.30am and 4.30pm on 3rd September. Entry to the event is free of charge and food and drink tokens will be available to purchase on the day, with oysters costing from £1 each.
