WHAT’S THE BUZZ?
Topsham is a stone’s throw from Exeter and the M5, yet a world apart in atmosphere. This quiet little harbour town on the Exe Estuary exudes peace and calm. Renowned for shipbuilding and its maritime history, it used to have a bigger port than Exeter. Now, however, it is a haven from the hustle and bustle of modern living. The Globe, a 16th-century coaching inn, sits in the heart of the community, offering great food downstairs and 19 four-star en-suite rooms upstairs.

There aren’t sea views from the hotel, but the little harbour on the estuary is just a moment’s stroll away. Here you can listen to the water lapping on the shore for as long as you like.

HOW ABOUT THE FOOD?
Friendly and welcoming staff add to the atmosphere in the busy restaurant. We tried the confit chicken and steamed River Exe mussels, which were both excellent, accompanied by a bottle of Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc, recommended by the manager and full of flavour. Regular mains include beef shin burger and chicken breast with truffle mash and woodland mushroom cream. Finish with a superb selection of West Country cheeses, served beautifully with chards of celery and a bunch of grapes.

WHAT WILL IT COST?
Prices start from £79 per room per night in low season and rise to £109 in high season. Breakfast is extra at £8.50 per person.
