We visit The Idle Rocks in St Mawes.
WHAT'S THE BUZZ?
The fashionable little fishing village of St Mawes is having quite a moment. Not only is it located in what must be one of the prettiest parts of South Cornwall – the Roseland Peninsula – it also boasts a quaint high street, a genuinely friendly feel and a picturesque harbour with views of Falmouth and beyond.
The Idle Rocks is located right on the harbourfront so you can walk to any of the neighbouring attractions (St Mawes Castle or Lamorran House Gardens, for example) from there, as well as having easy access to the ferry to Falmouth. If you like watersports or outdoor swimming, both are literally on your doorstep.
WHAT ARE THE ROOMS LIKE?
The hotel has 20 rooms but you wouldn’t know it as it has an intimate, friendly feel more like a large, super chic family home. Each room has the guests name chalked on the door and the decor is contemporary but comfortable – think whitewashed walls, modern art work and patterned textiles in pretty nautical shades. The hotel offers a mixture of room sizes for families and couples alike, many with sea views.
ANY LUXURIOUS TOUCHES?
Our seaview room featured a pretty balconette window with French doors out to the sea. An understated luxury feel permeated throughout the room, from the French furnishings to the Italian coffee machine. The bathroom was a lovely place to spend time, with Aromatherapy Associates toiletries, large rain shower and bathtub.
BEST SEA VIEW?
Spectacular sea views are aplenty here – you are right on the harbour after all. The best sea view would have to be from the terrace, which overlooks the bay and rolling hills beyond. It’s a wonderful and popular spot for breakfast or a cocktail.
HOW ABOUT THE FOOD?
All meals are served in the open plan restaurant overlooking the sea, with dining on the terrace when the sun shines. It’s a relaxed affair with a focus on friendly service and Cornish produce. We enjoyed a dinner of Cornish scallops, harissa baked cod and grilled mullet, and a roast pineapple pud, washed down with a bottle of Sancerre.
